rates for authors

My rates follow Editors Canada industry standard and take into consideration my 15+ years of experience. For my author clients, I offer rates for one-off services as well as ongoing coaching packages.

Structural Editing: Manuscripts

I love me a good structural edit. (It’s my superpower, if you will.) I love it so much that this type of editing is where I specialize.

The structural edit should be your first step from draft to publication. This type of editing looks at big-picture items.

For memoir, a structural edit examines things like pace, narrative development, memoir focus and message, “character” development, order, tense, and voice.

For fiction, a structural edit examines things like reading level, pace, dialogue, believability, character development, plot, tense, and perspective.

For non-fiction, a structural edit examines things like reading level, pace, narrative voice, consistency, order of information, coherency, and information gaps.

After I’ve conducted a structural edit of your manuscript, I’ll return to you with comments on the manuscript itself, noting specific suggestions and comments. In addition, you’ll receive a separate Summary Comments document to guide you through your editing journey.

My editing style is coach-like, so I never tell an author what to do or demand changes (exception: racist, sexist, exclusive language/themes). Instead, I offer suggestions for improving your manuscript so that it can be its absolute best.

(Yes, I do offer copyediting and proofreading, but I take on fewer of those projects so that I can devote more of my time to structural edits.)

Connect with me to talk about how I can help with your manuscript editing needs.

Your exact cost will be based on level of editing required, the quality of writing, the genre of writing, word count, and desired timeline. However, authors can use this guide to get a rough estimate of costs  for a structural edit and contact me directly for a more accurate quote:

65,000 words: $2500 CAD
75,000 words: $2850 CAD
85,000 words: $3200 CAD

I do offer sample edits, which allow you to get an idea of my editing style. I 100% believe an author should connect with their editor, and I only take on clients where I feel this connection because it allows us to enter a team mentality, putting the work above anything else.

10–15 pages*: $100 CAD

*double spaced

Coaching packages

Need a bit of extra motivation to move your book forward? Want some 1:1 guidance on writing tips, brainstorming, and publishing advice? For clients who would like to enter a more involved relationship with me, I offer both group and 1:1 coaching packages.

Group Memoir/Life Writing Coaching:

A few times a year, I offer a memoir coaching program that is a blend of peer support and 1:1 coaching. You can learn more about that program (including upcoming class dates) here.

I’ll be offering this program Spring 2024. Reach out for more info!

 1:1 Book Coaching (any genre):

You know how some people hire personal trainers to see the results they want? Book coaching can work the same way. If you’re motivated to complete your manuscript and you want to invest all your energy into reaching that goal, you might want to consider signing up for some book coaching with me.

Here’s how it works: You sign up for a set period of time (I offer 3 month, 6 month, and 12 month packages, but we can also customize a package that works for you). Each month, we’ll meet for an hour (via Zoom or phone—your preference) to set your writing goals and map out a plan so that you feel confident you can reach these goals. We’ll discuss possible obstacles and challenges, and we’ll chat through success strategies.

What happens next is up to you. Some of my clients are happy with a monthly accountability call. Others would like some editing assistance on top of the accountability call.

Rates depend on your specific needs, starting at $150 CAD for a one-hour coaching call.

Please note: I have limited spaces available for book coaching so please reach out if you’d like to chat about getting onto my list.
